How to play it

Tips from Silver Oak's course tour, in our words.

Hole 1 · par 4
Stay away from the left, where a water hazard waits. This is the flattest green on the course, with lots of space short of it to run the ball onto the putting surface.
Hole 2 · par 3
The tee is elevated, so club down from the yardage. The large green has sage around it and a slope behind it; landing on the wrong tier from the pin can mean a tough two-putt.
Hole 3 · par 5
An uphill par 5 that tests your accuracy; patience pays. Keep your approach below the hole and mind the green's speed and slope.
Hole 4 · par 4
Looks simple, but the fairway is narrow and short, so a long drive may run into the rough near its end. Leave yourself below the hole for the best birdie look.
Hole 5 · par 4
Big hitters should hit less than driver and aim for the center of the fairway, with sagebrush around it and little room for error. Add at least a club for the approach to an elevated green that tilts from the back left toward the front right.
Hole 6 · par 3
A short par 3: aim straight at any pin that's center or right. Bunkers sit at the front and right of the green, and sagebrush is just left.
Hole 7 · par 3
Note the pin position, since the sloping green can cost strokes. The bail-out is short of the green; avoid the front-left bunker at all costs, and a hidden bunker behind the green catches long or low shots. The right-side slope of the green can help you.
Hole 8 · par 4
An open par 4 where you can swing freely: the fairway is wide with plenty of room on the right for misses. The green is fairly flat, a good birdie chance.
Hole 9 · par 5
Long hitters can swing away, ideally with a fade. Aim for the fairway left of the bunkers on the right to set up the approach. The safe layup is short and left of center.
Hole 10 · par 4
Hit it straight at the barber pole for an even lie on the approach. A thin dry riverbed cuts across 70 yards short of the green, so big hitters should hit less than driver. The mound at the green's front right funnels balls from the center down to the back.
Hole 11 · par 4
A dogleg right with a large pond down the right side. Aim at the barber pole from the tee with a fade, then hit it straight into the green, which is long and fairly flat with three bunkers on both sides.
Hole 12 · par 3
A straight par 3 to a long green split front to back by a valley. The front tier sits higher than the back, so play to the correct tier; long putts are very hard here.
Hole 13 · par 4
The No. 1 handicap hole for men: a long par 4 you can reach in two, but a long iron is hard to hold on the green. Hit away off the tee, then choose carefully, because a large pond sits between the fairway and the green; laying up may be smart. Wind can make club choice tricky into this shallow green.
Hole 14 · par 3
Uphill to an elevated green that can be hard to hold, so consider landing it front left and rolling it up to the pin. Short right funnels into the swale.
Hole 15 · par 5
A well-protected par 5: drive to the fairway's center, away from the lake on the right. Long hitters can try for the green in two, but a narrow dry creek bed sits 50 yards short of it and a large lake wraps the left and back, so when in doubt, lay up short of the creek bed. The green is small with plenty of undulation.
Hole 16 · par 4
A short, straight par 4 and another birdie chance. Starting 125 yards out, six bunkers flank the fairway, and the large, fairly flat green has lots of space around it.
Hole 17 · par 4
Aim at the barber pole in the middle of the fairway, or a bit right, where the fairway widens for bigger hitters. The two-tiered green slopes from back to front and narrows sharply at the front, so check the flag position when choosing your approach club.
