How to play it
Tips from the resort's Sun Mountain hole-by-hole page, in our words.
- Hole 1 · par 4
- A long downhill par 4 framed by yucca and Joshua trees. Favor the left side.
- Hole 2 · par 4
- A short downhill par 4. A fairway wood off the tee sets up an easy approach.
- Hole 3 · par 5
- A generous landing area, so swing away, but keep it right for the best angle in.
- Hole 4 · par 3
- A long carry over water with a bunker right and little room left.
- Hole 5 · par 4
- Another long carry over water, uphill. The left side of the fairway leaves an easier shot to an undulating green.
- Hole 6 · par 4
- A classic Pete Dye hole with railroad ties. Keep the tee shot right; the green is heavily bunkered left.
- Hole 7 · par 5
- A double-dogleg par 5 with desert left and bunkers right. Long hitters can get there in two.
- Hole 8 · par 3
- Carry the desert to a green with heavy bunkering on the left. The green is big but shallow.
- Hole 9 · par 4
- Bite off as much desert as you dare. Bailing right leaves a longer approach to a shallow, tricky green.
- Hole 10 · par 4
- A short par 4 and a birdie chance.
- Hole 11 · par 5
- A long uphill par 5 to a plateau green. The green is shallow, so pick the right club.
- Hole 12 · par 4
- The longest par 4, slightly uphill. Without a long drive you'll have a long iron in. The back-left pin is Dye's favorite.
- Hole 13 · par 4
- Needs another long drive to set up an approach to a tiered green.
- Hole 14 · par 3
- A long par 3. The sod-faced bunker in front looks scary, but there's room.
- Hole 15 · par 4
- A short par 4. The safe play left leaves a forced carry; to drive the green, find the upper fairway between bunkers left and desert right.
- Hole 16 · par 5
- The tee shot is wide open; the second must carry a pot bunker in the middle of the fairway.
- Hole 17 · par 3
- The shortest hole, but the green is long and the back falls away.
- Hole 18 · par 4
- Water left, bunkers right, and a pot bunker in front of the green to carry with a high approach.
